We are very excited to share with you three new prints we created recently for Poetic Aesthetic: An Exploration of Creativity in Poetry and Visual Art an exhibition presented by The Art Gallery at the University of Maryland. The opening reception is tomorrow evening, now Friday, January 28 due to the weather, and though we will not be in attendance, we hope if you live in that area you would considering checking it out. It’s gonna be such a great show, show curator and our good friend, John Shipman, never disappoints.
The gallery paired together a Maryland poet with a national or international artist and each created three new works of art based on, and incorporating, the poems (or poem) of the poet. The medium of the works vary from paintings, drawings and screen-printed posters to sculptures, videos and installations.
Here are the three limited edition hand silkscreened prints we created based on poet Elizabeth Arnold’s poem entitled Monster from Effacement, which is a book-length sequence of poems. Each print features the selection of Arnold’s poem that inspired it. Elizabeth is a professor at the University of Maryland and her works have appeared in Poetry, Slate, TriQuarterly, Conjunctions, Antioch Review, Chicago Review, Sagetrieb, Literary Imagination, Gulf Coast, The Carolina Review, Tikkun, Pequod, Smartish Pace, Poetry Daily, Kalliope, and Shankpain.
Poetic. Aesthetic. opens on Friday, January 28, 2011 with an Opening Reception from 5:00 -7:00 pm, and will be on exhibit through March 5, 2011. Each of the works will be available for purchase at the show as well! After the opening reception tomorrow, each of our three prints will be available for purchase from our web store and the Hero Boutique. These are each a very small edition of just 50 prints each and we have less than 20 prints available of each print for sale , once these are gone, they will not be printed again.

Poetic. Aesthetic. explores the relationship between the lyricism of poetry and the aesthetic force of the visual. By probing this relationship, Poetic. Aesthetic. also seeks to foster creative collaboration across artistic disciplines. Working with the University of Maryland Creative Writing faculty, The Art Gallery has partnered Maryland poets with national and international artists to collaborate on visual works for Poetic Aesthetic. Each visual artist will create three new works of art based on, and incorporating, the poems of one poet. Poetic. Aesthetic. exhibits works in various media, including paintings, sculptures, videos, drawings, screen-printed posters, and installations.
