WHO / WHAT IS HERO?
Hero is husband and wife team, Beth Manos and Mark Brickey. We are a design, illustration and screen printing duo that met in 2003, fell in love and starting designing together. We love to draw, travel, go thrifting, walk our dog and ride our bikes together, among lots of other things. In 2013, we moved ourselves and Hero from Buffalo, NY to Long Beach, CA (check out our proper BIO here)
HOW DO YOU SPEND SO MUCH TIME TOGETHER AS HUSBAND/WIFE AND BUSINESS PARTNERS AND NOT WANT TO KILL EACH OTHER?
Believe it or not, we are very much in love. Being able to do what you love, with the person you love is one of the greatest feelings in the world. Cheesy? Yes. But absolutely true. When you have a late night of printing and you are at the studio until 2am, being together makes it that much more fun. (And yes, working late can be fun)
HOW CAN I DO WHAT YOU DO?
JUST DO IT! Bust your ass and make it happen. The long and winding road that has taken us to where we are now hasn’t been easy. We eat, sleep and breath Hero and at times it can all be a struggle, but we do it all because we love what we do and we both know there is no other place we would rather be.
WILL YOU WORK FOR FREE?
Probably not. We really enjoy having a place to live and having food on our table, so when we put many hours into something for someone else, we definitely believe in charging money for our services. We know this is a crazy concept to some, but we really do believe it makes sense and so far, though the place we live and the food aren’t necessarily the fanciest, it seems to be working OK for us.
SINCE YOU WON’T WORK FOR FREE, WHAT EXACTLY AM I PAYING FOR?
Creativity, originality, hands-on design and printing, communication, personal attention and lots of other goodies.
WILL YOU COME SPEAK TO MY SCHOOL, PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION, ETC?
Yes, we would love to. We’ve been hired to tell the tale of Hero, teach the basics of screen printing and we are fairly certain some people actually listen. Drop us an email, we love to talk to anyone that will listen.
ARE YOU HIRING?
Nope. Hero was started 7 years ago as a small operation and we plan on keeping it that way. The one person that we’ve hired without regret is our fabulous bookkeeper. She makes the real magic happen.
DO YOU OFFER INTERNSHIPS?
Occasionally, yes. Right now, no. We believe an internship is very important and we will only consider it if we feel that the learning and growing would be mutual between us and the intern. Drop us a line if you think we might like you, and if you think that we can’t live without you. But please don’t be offended if we do not return your email, it probably just means we are very busy and not looking for an intern at that time.
WILL YOU PRINT SOMETHING I DESIGNED?
Most likely, no. While we do a lot of screen printing and love it, we learned the process to primarily print our own work. We prefer to remain designers and not become printers, for a variety of reasons. We would gladly print any design you’d like us to create for you!
Here are a couple printmakers we recommend that you contact if you need something of your own screen printed:

MY FAVORITE GIG POSTER SAYS “SOLD OUT”, WILL YOU RE-PRINT IT?
Sorry, but no. All of our prints are signed and numbered in limited editions. To reprint a poster or print would not only go against any consent and agreement we have with bands and management but it is also unfair to everyone that bought the print originally under the assumption that it was limited to a certain edition size. So, once a run of posters is gone-they’re gone. Sorry.
WHAT IS A SCREENPRINT?
Silkscreen printing (also known as serigraphy) is a method of print making in which the negative of an image is blocked out of a screen of fine mesh, and ink is pulled through the open areas of the mesh onto the printing surface. Every color requires a new screen and therefore another entire set up and run. Our posters are not reproductions or printed from a computer. They are hand-printed using only ink, paper, a squeegee, and a screen.
WHY DO SOME POSTERS COST MORE THAN OTHERS?
There are a number of variables that affect the price of a poster: the size of the print, the edition size, the amount of colors, the quantity we still have in stock. Any of these can determine what we choose to sell a given print.
WHAT DOES “SIGNED AND NUMBERED” MEAN? DOES THAT MEAN THE BAND SIGNED THE PRINT?
No, unless stated otherwise, our prints are not signed by the band. “Signed and numbered” is referring to the fact that each print is produced in a limited edition and signed by us. If a print is a limited edition of a certain number, the edition is printed at one time, never to be reprinted. This maintains the integrity of the edition and why they are all numbered and signed. Each print is hand numbered according to the run size and signed “Hero”. You will not be getting an autograph from the band if it is a gigposter. Occasionally we will reprint an art print, but we will change an element such as the colors or the paper or both, to make the new edition unique to the previous edition. Additionally, we occasionally run certain popular art prints in open edition limited runs, meaning we may continue to run that specific design without limitation to the edition size or changes to the art work, therefore it will still be limited edition, just not capped at a certain run size and it will not be numbered, just signed.
WHEN WILL YOU HAVE A NEW WEBSITE?
Soon, VERY soon. Lots of big changes coming in 2013. Stay tuned!
